Physical Appearance:

Jace has fine, light blond hair and gold eyes. He has a slim, muscular build. His face is described as being pretty and angular, and Clary often refers to him as beautiful. Like all other Shadowhunters, he is covered in thin, silver scars from years of applying various runes to the skin with a stele for battle and killing purposes. He also has a fine tan that makes his skin a light gold color. He resembles his father except that he has his mother’s eyes. He also bears the birthmark of the Herondale’s - a star shaped scar on his shoulderblade.

Personality:

The archetypal Byronic hero, Jace is sarcastic, cynical, and witty but also vain, arrogant, and full of angst. He gives the impression of holding most people in disdain but is quite chivalrous toward women. His charisma, good looks and charm have made him quite the ladies’ man and he is somewhat promiscuous. He never forms emotional attachments for more than a short period of time, if at all. Valentine was a domineering and bullying father to Jace and taught him that “to love is to destroy”. The only people Jace has any feelings for before meeting Clary are Alec and Isabelle and, to a lesser degree, Maryse and Robert and Max. Jace shares the snobbish attitude toward mundanes and Downworlders that the Lightwoods have in common with Valentine, though he lacks their extremist tendencies. Beneath Jace’s flippant exterior lies a soul in constant torment. Jace is filled with a deep-seated rage that he keeps in check most of the time and which he channels into fighting and slaying demons. While Isabelle often dates around to calm her nerves, Jace relaxes by getting into fights. Clary figured that fighting must be to Jace “what sex is to normal people”. Jace is a very passionate individual and when he falls in love with Clary he does so quite deeply. Jace’s conceited exterior hides a deep inner hatred which intensifies after he learns that he is part demon. He blames this for his incestuous feelings towards Clary. Fortunately he later learns that he and Clary aren’t actually siblings and rather than being part demon, he is in fact part angel. Jace has a strong moral core but also exhibits sadistic tendencies which he gets from Valentine and at times he can be extremely vindictive though often he is being cruel to protect those he loves. Part of Jace loves Valentine because, despite the abuse, he was often kind and affectionate to Jace.
